What is a responsive website and why you should have one?

Before the popularity of smart mobile devices, websites had a set width to display on a desktop or laptop computers which are not mobile friendly, one would then need to create a separate mobi site for mobile uses, these desktop sites will have you scrolling around left and right to view the part of the site that extends outside the screen area or be reduced to such a size that it’s impossible to navigate or read.

Today we have “Responsive Design”, this allows the website to adapt to the size of the screen.  By using modules to display content we are able to display for example 3 news items in a row on a desktop screen, when viewing on a mobile device these modules will stack themselves to fit the mobile screen, this would display the news items vertically below each other.

Make sure that when you are having your website designed that it is Responsive!

There is also as option to display modules specific to the device, creating one module to display on the desktop which could be graphic intense and then using an alternative module as a mobile version with less graphics, whatever the reason this option is available.

With all the various screen sizes out there from Smart phones and tablets to desktops and laptops you can see it’s a smart move to go with responsive design.
